Funeral for a Friend

My boyfriend of five years, Nate Winkle, passed away on May 2nd, 2006.
We had been apart for nearly three years, and I was just begininng to talk to him again.
We had plans to meet up in the summer, so we scould reminisce, and he
would take me for a ride in his D'Lorean.

What we shard seemed like a lifetime. It began when I was a sophomore in
high school, i really can't write anymore. Not now.
The pain and shock is still too fresh.
This blog is on hiatus until further notice.

This photo was taken a couple of years ago. I just came across it last night while shuffling thru my non-digital photo albums. This is a real sign from a real church in my previous hometown of Andover, MN.
The letters were not manipulated by vandals or the photographer. This is what it really said.
I'm not quite sure what it's supposed to mean, but I have some ideas.
Maybe someone out there can shed some light on this subject . . .

The title of this post is a song by the Electric Six.
I'm feeling electric because I am going to see my favorite musical
act of ALL TIME play at a sold out show at the Orpheum inMinneapolis.
The performers; TOOL. The date; May 12, 2006.
My anticipation: bursting at the seams.
Tool's shows are amazing. I have seen them twice at the Xcel.
Tool at the Orpheum will be INCREDIBLE.
Such an intimate theater. Such an enormous presentation.
Their shows have been described as an assualt on the senses.
Truly, an experience I will cherish.

Bowling has been around for quite some time, although there is a dispute as to when it really began. Through the centuries, it has unbdergone some drastic changes and innovations.
Nowadays, huge corporate bowling entertainment centers are springing up all over the midwest and bowling is increasing in popularity once agian.
It's fun with a few beers and some freinds, but still wholesome enough to enjoy with the whole fam-damily. So go out and roll a ball today!

"Poor Pitiful Pearl"

This is my grandmother's Poor Pitiful Pearl doll from the 1960's. She was produced in the late fifties, the 60's, and re-marketed in the 70's. i'm not sure how old this particular doll is, but it bears the original clothing. I found a site online the other day selling yougn womens casual, trendy "hippie" like clothing that's taken the name Poor Pitiful Pearl. I think it's funny and I wonder if these girls with the initials PPP embroidered on their lapels know the history behind the clever name.

The Easter Bunny

I found the Easter Bunny hopping across yards last night, delivering baskets of treats to youngsters all over northern Minnesota. Of course, each region has it's own breed of Easter Bunny. I think he was a White Tail Jack rabbit. You decide. Anyway, he was busy delivering baskets filled with candy and love while the local stray stalked him from some bushes. I stood watch to make sure that antsy cat didn't sink his teeth into the Easter Bunny or his baskets of joy. That would have been very sad. Then who would give the kids candy?
Let's just hope that Easter Bunny doesn't go hopping into any government facilities!

This is some of my own original work. Images are cut from magazines and rubber cemented (for better or worse) to the board. Making collages is something I have enjoyed for years. i love playing with the shapes and spaces and manipulating them spo they enhance the messages of the words and pictures. Some do not contain words. A big thanks to all whose work I've ripped from the pages of magazines and used to call it my own.

New Building for the Guthrie

This is the new Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. It's state of the art hologram design is stunning. It has the potential to distract a driver toward ruin.
The firrt is a terrible photo I took thru the windsheild of a minivan. Look closely at the photo below and you can see one of the hologram images. They appear periodically on all sides of the building. If you visit the Twin Cities, be sure to take a look. I'll update soon to tell you when it opens.

When I stayed at my girl-friend Val's apartment over spring break, I got to sleep on the couch in the living room with the natural alarm clock. That bird squawks in response to TV noises, loud voices, cat meows, and the sun just beginning to rise. Actually, it squawked the whole time I was there besides the precious half-hours during the night, and when the illusion of night descended upon him in the form of a blanket over his cage.

I can't remember his name because I kept calling him Paulie. And "shut-up."

I used to be hardcore into Lego's when I was younger. I support the toy, and I'm still a fan, so I visited LegoLand in MOA last week during Spring Break and brought back some photos from my trip.

Below is a picture of me and the Mayor shaking hands. I was later presented with the Key to LegoLand in a ceremony where cameras are prohibited.

I spotted some celebrities in LegoLand, watched them test spacships and sattelites, and marveled at the construction in progress.

Lego's are fun! Whether you share them with a child, discover or re-discover them yourself, it is a fun, intelligent, and healthy toy. You need never worry about them malfunctioning. And if you ever visit LegoLand, you'll be treated like royalty.

It rained hard last Tuesday here in Northern Minnesota. A heavy, icy, slushy sort of rain that pelted me on the way to class and covered many a car in thick gobs of slush. That rain turned to heavy snow and dumped six inches of semi solid snowslush atop the frozen crust of white.

I found some snowshoes and strapped them to my boots as I took a stoll through some of the heaviest snow crust I could find. I think I might like to try it again, in a larger area.

Vehicles of the past are revived and cared for in the hands of collectors in attempt to preserve something from the past. Everyone loves nostalgia. But there is nothing more beautiful than a junked out antique overwhelmed by time, and the elements of nature.

Who drove this old truck? Who bought it brand new in the year it was made (I'm guessing late 40's early 50's), and where has it traveled to? This Ford has witnessed a wealth of history and memories that it will never divulge, but one can imagine. . .

What do you think of when you see the photo below? Does the tank symbolize only war? Do you think of any specific wars when you look at it? Did war not enter your mind unitl I mentioned it, or were you just wondering which ice encased section of the globe this tank occupies? If it wasn't any of those things, I guess I'm not much of an internet mind reader. But I have to say that when I saw the tank on the side of the road in Fosston, MN, I thought to myself "What a fun picture!"

I have never been especially fond of cats. I'm allergic, I hate the idea of them pooping in a box in the laundry room, they play don't catch, they don't fetch,they won't go on walks with you, and they have several other qualities I find distasteful in a pet.

Rumaging through my photo bin I noticed that I have a plethora of purrrfect pictures of cats. My photographer's eye seems to be drawn to animals in the first place, but in this particular photo bin, the cat pictures seemed be in the majority.

What is it about cats that the camera cannot resist? Or is it the cat that is drawn to the camera? Almost all of my shots featuring feline's as the subject (there are more than these four) show the cat looking directlty into the camera.

Are cats born performers, relishing in the spotlight and the dramatic? There are many references to cats personalities beign akin to that of a celebrity. Is this evident in the way they behave when photographed? I'm not sure. Lets take a look at some candid Canine photos and compare them to the cats.

Everyday it's amazing how many images and words and messages we see trying to sell us something. The song "Signs" talks more about how those images give us directions or demands, restrictions and separations. These are all negative aspects to the sign.

In this day and age, our new dreaded "sign" is the advertisment. We are constanlty told to consume , consume, consume!

Here are some signs that don't inviade my imagination with propaganda. A clean departure from the "intent to sell". Oh, I beleive there is an old Beauty Shop sign and an old billboard for a cafe'. Well technically these are advertisements, but the things they are selling no longer exist, so its okay. The only really demanding sign is "no hunting", but I hope that doens't cause a conflict, and all the signs you may view on this blog are easy on the eyes.
